01 · CHOOSING A HOUSE

How to choose a sober living in Miami

01

Is it certified?

Look for FARR certification. Certified homes are inspected and held to written standards. Florida treatment providers generally can only refer clients to certified residences. Coral is FARR certified, Program ID 7000.

02

Are the rules enforced?

Ask about curfew, drug testing, meeting requirements, work or IOP expectations, and what happens if someone uses. Vague answers are an answer.

03

Who is in charge day to day?

A house manager on site means problems get handled when they happen, not days later.

Miami has dozens of sober living homes. Some are well run and some are not. The house you pick in early recovery makes a real difference, so ask these questions before you move in.

04

What does the rate include?

Some homes quote a low price, then add utilities, WiFi, or laundry. Get the full weekly cost in writing.

05

Is it near meetings and transit?

Early recovery runs on meetings and a job. Walking distance to both makes life easier, especially without a car.

06

How long has it been open?

A home that has run for years has a track record you can check: reviews, referral partners, and alumni.

07

What do residents say?

Read Google reviews. Ask to tour the house or speak with a current resident.

Red flags
  • No certification, or they can't show it

  • No drug testing, or "only if we suspect something"

  • Free rent tied to a specific treatment program

  • Pressure to move in before seeing the house

  • No written rules or agreement

02 · WHAT TO EXPECT

Your first week at Coral

Moving in can feel like a lot, especially straight from detox or treatment. Here is what the first week actually looks like.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Call 305-709-1582 to confirm a bed. We go over rates, house rules, and what to bring.

DAY 1 · MOVE IN

The house manager shows you your room, walks you through the house, and gives you the resident agreement. Meet the other men.

What to bring
  • Clothes for about a week (laundry is on site)

  • Toiletries

  • Prescribed medications in original bottles

  • ID and important documents

  • Phone and charger

DAYS 2–3 · GET CONNECTED

Start your five meetings a week, several within walking distance. Begin asking for a sponsor. Learn the routine: chores and the 10:30 PM weeknight curfew.

DAYS 4–7 · BUILD A PLAN

Every resident works, goes to school, or attends IOP. Continue your IOP or start job hunting. Transit and employers are close, and residents often know who is hiring.

What the first week feels like

Honestly, it can be uncomfortable: new people, new rules, a lot to sort out. That's normal. The men in the house have been through the same thing, and many say the first week is where things started to turn around.

03 · KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

Sober living vs. halfway house

People in Miami often use the two terms interchangeably. There is overlap, but there are real differences worth knowing.

Which is right for you?

Leaving treatment and want structure while you get back to work? Sober living is usually the fit. If a court or program requires a specific placement, follow their direction.

Where Coral fits

We're a FARR-certified men's sober living home, more structured than most: five meetings a week, a sponsor, a weeknight curfew, regular screenings, and work, school, or IOP. Some call that a halfway house. We call it structure that works, for over 25 years.
